Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Browne Lab at University College London

We are seeking a motivated, creative and technically strong Postdoctoral Research Fellow to develop preclinical neurotechnology for adaptive neural interfaces.

The project will focus on building closed-loop experimental systems for chronic pain research. The role will involve chronic implantation in mice, neural recording, behavioural monitoring, coding, device control and quantitative analysis. The successful candidate will develop and test systems that can detect neural or behavioural state and use this information to guide intervention in real time.

This project brings together systems neuroscience, chronic pain biology, neural engineering and implantable interfaces. It would particularly suit someone who enjoys building new tools, refining experimental systems and using them to answer difficult questions about brain circuits and behaviour.

The post holder will work across in vivo neuroscience, custom behavioural systems, data acquisition, analysis pipelines and closed-loop control. They will have the opportunity to develop new experimental tools, generate high-quality preclinical data and contribute to publications, conference presentations and future translational strategies.

The position is based in the Neural Circuits for Pain lab, led by Dr Liam Browne at the UCL Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research. The lab studies how brain circuits contribute to chronic pain and other maladaptive brain states, using approaches including optogenetics, chemogenetics, two-photon imaging, electrophysiology, machine learning and quantitative behavioural analysis.

The post forms part of EPIONE, a major EPSRC- and MRC-funded programme developing adaptive neurotechnologies for chronic pain. The successful candidate will work closely with neuroscientists, engineers, computational and theoretical researchers, clinicians and industry partners across UCL, Oxford, Cambridge and Glasgow.

We welcome applications from systems neuroscientists, neuroengineers and hands-on in vivo researchers with a PhD, or who are close to completing one, in neuroscience, neurotechnology, bioengineering or a related field. Strong experience with in vivo mouse experiments is essential, ideally including chronic implants, neural recording or long-term behavioural studies. Experience with Python, quantitative analysis, behavioural systems, data acquisition or device control would be highly valuable.
